• Asbestosis. A severe respiratory disease, asbestosis is caused by inhaling asbestos fibers and dust, and can cause great damage to the victim’s lungs. Over time, that damage—which includes scarring of the lung—can make it difficult for the lung to get oxygen into the blood. As a result, victims experience severe shortness of breath. They often suffer heart disease, too, because the heart has to work harder to overcome the lung’s inefficiency. Like mesothelioma, asbestosis has no known cure, and victims are often required to use supplemental oxygen, greatly limiting their quality of life.
• Pleural thickening. In some individuals, the lining of the lung—known as the pleura—can harden in response to asbestos exposure. This can happen in one or both lungs, and, like asbestosis, it can severely restrict breathing. In extreme but not uncommon cases, the condition can be life threatening.
• Pleural plaques. While they often do not cause symptoms, these small areas of thickening, or scarring, of the lung are often a precursor to other asbestos-related diseases. They can be quite painful, too, once when the plaques harden.
• Asbestos warts. These callus-like growths are caused when asbestos fibers lodge in an individual’s skin. Like pleural plaques, they are a worrisome sign that someone has been exposed to asbestos and may be at risk of developing more serious diseases. Though themselves benign, asbestos warts can be a troubling signal of the devastation that may lie ahead.

Framingham firefighter lost to mesothelioma cancer
Early this month, Framingham, Massachusetts firefighter Mike Urban, 57, lost his battle with mesothelioma cancer. This aggressive disease that affects the protective lining of the body’s major cavities and organs is rare and caused almost exclusively by exposure to asbestos.

The recently released Final Reuse Plot for Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. describes in fantastic detail what will happen to the 62 acres under redevelopment. But, there is still a fantastic deal of concern surrounding the amount of contamination that will have to be dealt with in buildings slated for demolition and renovation.
The Army assumes the presence of lead-based paint in any building constructed before 1978, has found petroleum and PCBs in soil samples and has identified asbestos in seven buildings. Asbestos is a toxic fiber used commonly in construction prior to the 1980’s and is known to cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the lining of the body’s major cavities and organs.
The area around the historically-designated central heating plant is particularly contaminated. Known as Building 15, the plot lists it as an “attractive retail destination.” Additionally, two 400,000-gallon underground storage tanks used to hold heating oil have to be removed. The cost of this clean-up is expected to be “significant.”
Asbestos abatement on its own is an expensive undertaking, as it is a long, legally regulated process. But, if asbestos removal is not handled property, both workers and the surrounding community could be exposed to carcinogenic fibers that can cause pleural or peritoneal mesothelioma, which affect the lining of the lungs and abdomen respectively.
The full scope of contamination at Walter Reed has yet to be conclusively determined, and the Army is showing small interest in dealing with any problems. It is, but, keen to go on with the land transfer.

ADAO Applauds Assembly Committee on Natural Resources for Passing Resolution to Repeal the Designation of Asbestos Laden Serpentine as the California State Rock

The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) applauds both Senator Gloria Romero for authoring SB 624 and the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources for passing this legislation to remove serpentine, the host rock of asbestos, as California’s official state rock, supporting the eradication of asbestos to promote public health.

“California has the highest rate of mesothelioma deaths in the nation,” said Senator Gloria Romero (D-East Los Angeles). “This bill is about raising awareness to protect the health of our citizens. Serpentine contains asbestos, a known carcinogen. Toxic materials have no place serving as emblems for the State.”
Asbestos causes cancers and respiratory diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer that claim 10,000 people every year in the United States and nearly 100,000 people worldwide. In 1965, serpentine was designated as the state rock of California in order to promote the then-lucrative asbestos mining industry. A practically indestructible lethal fiber, asbestos has been used for decades in numerous industries throughout California including building construction and naval shipyards, as well as in common household products ranging from crayons to blow dryers. Though asbestos is banned in 52 countries, it is not banned in the United States.

NON HODGKIN'S LYMPHOMA
What is?
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (also known as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, NHL, or sometimes just lymphoma) is a cancer that starts in cells called lymphocytes, which are part of the body's immune system. Lymphocytes are in the lymph nodes and other lymphoid tissues (such as the spleen and bone marrow). These will be described in more detail in the section "The lymph system and lymphoid tissue."
Some other types of cancer -- lung or colon cancers, for example -- can spread to lymph tissue such as the lymph nodes or bone marrow. But cancers that start in these places and then spread to the lymph tissue are not lymphomas.
There are 2 main types of lymphomas.
Hodgkin lymphoma (also known as Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin disease, or Hodgkin's disease) is named after Dr. Thomas Hodgkin, who first described it.

These 2 types of lymphomas differ in how they behave, spread, and respond to treatment.
Doctors can usually tell the difference between them by looking at the cancer cells under a microscope. In some cases, sensitive lab tests may be needed to tell them apart.

PLEURAL FLUID
Pleural fluid is a serous fluid produced by the normal pleurae. Most fluid is produced by the parietal circulation (intercostal arteries) via bulk flow and reabsorbed by the lymphatic system. Thus, pleural fluid is produced and reabsorbed continuously. In a normal 70 kg human, a few milliliters of pleural fluid is always present within the intrapleural space.[2] Larger quantities of fluid can accumulate in the pleural space only when the rate of production exceeds the rate of reabsorption. Normally, the rate of reabsorption increases as a physiological response to accumulating fluid, with the reabsorption rate increasing up to 40 times the normal rate before significant amounts of fluid accumulate wi
thin the pleural space. Thus, a profound increase in the production of pleural fluid—or some blocking of the reabsorbing lymphatic system—is required for fluid to accumulate in the pleural space.

Asbestos Lung Cancer Among Workers
Studies show an increase in lung cancer among workers exposed to asbestos. This increase is particularly significant among asbestos–exposed workers who smoke. Asbestos Lung Cancer Explained
Most asbestos lung cancer starts in the lining of the bronchi, the tubes into which the trachea or windpipe divides. However, asbestos lung cancer can also begin in other areas such as the trachea, bronchioles (small branches of the bronchi), or alveoli (lung air sacs). Although lung cancer usually develops slowly, once it occurs, cancer cells can break away and spread to other parts of the body.
The two most common types of lung cancer are small cell lung cancer (SCLC), in which the cancer cells are small and round, and non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), in which the cancer cells are larger. Sometimes a cancer has features of both types, and is called mixed small cell/large cell cancer.
Non–small cell lung cancer accounts for almost 80% of lung cancers. Small cell lung cancer accounts for about 20% of all lung cancers (American Cancer Society, Lung Cancer). Although the cancer cells are small, they can multiply quickly and form large tumors. The tumors can spread to the lymph nodes and to other organs.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used in a range of building materials to make them more rigid and fire resistant. It has also been used in household products such as ironing boards and oven gloves.
Asbestos was used extensively as a building material in Great Britain from the 1950s through to the mid 1980s.
Some of areas in your home where you may find asbestos include:
• eaves gutters and rainwater fall pipes
• fire blankets
• garage and shed roofs
• linings for walls, ceilings and doors
• insulation panels in some storage heaters

MESOTHELIOMA TYPES
Mesothelioma is not just lung cancer, the process starts from the chest or abdominal cavity lining and affect the organs contained in the lungs, heart and reproductive organs.
While Mesothelium is the tissue layer for the cavity in the upper body. As in the pleura, the area around the lungs, it is multiple networks with the inner (visceral layer) lining of the lung itself and the outer (parietal layer) layer of the chest wall.
Mesothelioma is a condition of uncontrolled cell growth that caused layers thickened mesothelium and often produce a fluid that meets between the two wall layers.
There are three types of mesothelioma:
1. Mesothelioma pleural
